Third Thursday Talk at Vermont League of Cities and Towns at City Center at State and Main in Montpelier

Thursday, December 15, 6:00-7:30

Lisa Bjerke – Waste is a Verb, Not a Noun

This talk will cover the Zero Waste Hierarchy, challenge the idea of the three Rs of reduce, reuse, and recycle, and give examples of strategies to move together towards zero waste.

Originally from Sweden, Lisa Bjerke gained her interest in discarded resource management while working as the compost manager during her undergraduate studies at College of the Atlantic. She received a Watson Fellowship in 2013 to travel to Germany, India, China, and Japan, exploring human conceptions of waste and resources.

Here’s a short talk Lisa gave last year:  http://tedxtalks.ted.com/video/Is-It-a-Waste-to-Call-It-Waste

Enter City Center at the door by Skinny Pancake.  There will be signs to lead you to the meeting room.

You Can Vote Every Day

There’s so much attention on the recent election, but it’s important to remember that we vote every day for the kind of world we want to live in with every dollar we spend.  Here in Vermont we have many local businesses that are taking us in the direction of a resilient local economy.  We have organic farmers, artisans, artists, dyers, cheese makers, restaurants with locally-sourced ingredients, and music-makers.  We also vote by NOT spending money on things we don’t need.
